Something sat with me after the Last Dance. Something really sat with me. That was a franchise that knew what they had. They did whatever it possibly took to win at all costs. Since June 13th, 1998 this franchise hasn’t done enough to win. They’ve stepped up to the plate and struck out numerous times. Kobe, LeBron, Dwayne Wade, Bosh, Carmelo, the list goes on and on. A franchise who continues to chase ghosts year after year. The man whose statue sits right in the middle of the United Center atrium, is a man who did whatever it takes to win at all costs. So why have we not lived by his style? You could always say we’ve done enough to be relevant. Luck hasn’t always struck our way. I do believe Derrick Rose, if never hurt, would’ve brought a title to this franchise. Regardless, the franchise dwelled on his injuries for 5 years. They built up excuses for their poorly executed moves constantly
Look at the Miami Heat. Do they have a dynasty of a franchise? No, not by any means. But Pat Riley and the entire organization does everything in their power to win constantly. In 2005 they went and got Shaquille O’Neal and went on to win a ring in just their second year together. They had a few rough seasons after the championship year. Shaq couldn’t stay healthy, and the role players weren’t good enough to help Wade. Bottom line is it wasn’t championship caliber basketball. So he says let’s sign LeBron James and Chris Bosh. Bam, more rings, more life. LeBron leaves for Cleveland, Bosh can’t stay Healthy, Wade retires. Oh the agony. Nope he goes and gets Jimmy Butler, builds a great cast around him and goes back to the NBA finals. Rough year? Who cares, let’s go get Kyle Lowry and get first place in the east and go 7 games in the eastern conference finals. It’s a franchise who will do whatever it takes to make a push at a ring. Win at all costs. Why can’t the Bulls be this way?
So here we are with an opportunity like no other to land Kevin Durant. Make it happen. Demar DeRozan, Patrick Williams, Nikola Vucevic, every pick until 2030, make it happen. Win at all costs. I hate to break it to you Bulls fans, but unless Patrick Williams starts playing like Kawhi Leonard this season, it will not be enough to win a championship. No matter how many 50 point Lavine games we get, it will not happen. I’m so grateful for what DeRozan did for our franchise this year. Damn it felt so good to be relevant again, but we will not win a championship with him on our roster. If the Bulls trot out this same lineup with Dragic and Drummond, the results do not change. You don’t beat the Bucks. You don’t beat the 76ers. You don’t beat the Celtics. With Kevin Durant, you can.
