With the MLB trade deadline a few days away, teams have begun to make deals to plug holes as they gear up for hopefully elongated postseason runs. There have been many rumors swirling on social media linking certain players to various teams, some of which make sense and some not so much. The Chicago White Sox were connected recently with a familiar face in pitcher Jose Quintana from the Pittsburgh Pirates. This might not be the splashy move that fans are hoping for, but it would be a very solid one nonetheless and a chance to add more pitching, which teams are always looking for. The White Sox need another pitcher right now given both Lucas Giolito’s recent inconsistencies and the team’s desire to limit Michael Kopech’s innings.
For the 2022 season, Quintana sports a 3.70 ERA in 19 games started. He’s not putting up numbers like Dylan Cease but will be able to get the job done and keep the team in games. Keeping the team in a game is the main thing you can ask from a starting pitcher to give his club a good shot of winning.
He’d be a good fit because he is familiar with the organization, and he also won’t be pressured into being the top arm. He will likely just make spot starts occasionally and be used as a long reliever out of the bullpen, which will be very helpful if he can continue pitching the way he’s been. The package to acquire Quintana should not be significant, which may help the White Sox chances at getting him since their farm system isn’t the strongest.
While it would be nice to trade for an ace like Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds, the White Sox just simply don’t have the prospect capital to outbid other desperate teams. Also, getting someone of Castillo’s caliber doesn’t exactly guarantee you a spot in the World Series. It’s important to get in the postseason in any capacity and the Atlanta Braves showed us last year that the underdog has just as good of a chance to win as the top seeds do. If Quintana can help the White Sox get into October and go deep, they will be happy with their investment in him.
