Ryan Poles is sort of killing free agency so far. The second wave is slowly coming to an end while the third wave creeps up. The armchair general managers will be furious we didn’t sign every top name known to man, but how can anyone be truly upset about what’s going on with the Bears right now?
Let’s take a look back into 2018 around the same time. We have a first time head coach, a second year quarterback with question marks, and a solid amount of money to spend. They immediately got to work signing Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Trey Burton, and then trading for Khalil Mack. They went all in one year into a new era? It looked like it worked out tremendously, but it was ultimately a major disappointment. Now the situations aren’t completely the same. Chicago’s defense was much more win-now ready going into 2018, but the way they spent and moves they made in their situation was a little… arrogant? Maybe that’s not the best word for it, but damn did Ryan Pace think he nailed it on the head with Mitch Trubisky and Matt Nagy. So why would anyone in Chicago want the slightest bit of a repeat? Do you wanna pay top dollar for premier guys when we don’t know if we have a capable quarterback or coaching staff? Hell no.
I feel like a perfect example is what the Los Angeles Chargers are doing right now. They’ve given Justin Herbert two years where he easily proved he’s the guy for the job. They even gave Brandon Staley a year. Now here they are going all in. Trading for Khalil Mack, signing pro bowl corner J. C. Jackson, and more. They’re doing it right. Now don’t get me wrong, I want us to still sign guys who are gonna help Justin Fields in his development. I’m not saying spend $20 million a year on Christian Kirk type deal, but go get a solid player for cheap and let Fields cook. We have two top 50 picks still, plenty of money to be spent in 2023, and still a good amount of solid talent on the current roster to build around. The future is bright in Chicago. Don’t be mad that we’re not signing Terron Armstead, or Julio Jones, or trading for a monster player. Poles is taking his time and letting the market play out so far. Players are gonna pass through teams and their value will decline and be there for Poles to sign. He’s had solid signings so far and a few big names might even pop up. Just let it play out. It’s year one, let’s ride.
