The Bears vs Father Time

I’ve had numerous Bears fans reach out to me after the Bears disgusting loss to the Browns. Asking me what’s next? “Should we be worried?” Uh, yeah you should be. That was by far the most disgusting offensive game plan I’ve seen in my entire life as a Bears fan. Do remember I watched Jimmy Clausen actually start a game in the navy and orange, while Marc Trestman was the head coach. This was worse. There needs to be a Bears group therapy session where we all meet at some small church and sit in a circle. Hi my name's Will and I’m a Chicago Bears fan who is very afraid of the next 5 years.

Write off 2021 right away. Only positives you can take from this year are Justin Field’s reps. I’ve seen many people say “He’s not ready yet, play Foles”. That is insanely absurd. Did we not watch Nick Foles play with Nagy last year? Did we see anything last year from Nagy and Foles where we should all of the sudden be like “yeah we need to go back to that”. Hell no. “Well Fields needs to just learn from the sideline like Mahomes and Rodgers did”. Guess what Justin Fields is gonna be learning an entire new playbook next year so what is he gaining from sitting on the sideline. Rodgers learned McCarthy’s system that he went on to run for 9 seasons after he finally came into the game. Mahomes learned Reid’s system that he’s now been running for 4 seasons. Fields will not be running this playbook for the foreseeable future. So get him reps.

Now let’s talk about the future. Next year we bring in hopefully some offensive genius that can figure this out. Let’s say we actually do. Good for the Bears! Now Fields gets to use his talents to succeed in a good system. This is going solid. Oh wait, we still don’t have a halfway decent offensive line. So we spend the next 1-2 years rebuilding that. Now wait Justin Fields isn’t going to be Super Bowl ready in just year #2. So let’s say he’s Super Bowl ready by year 4 of his career. We got a good offensive play caller, a solid offensive line, and maybe Darnell Mooney, David Montgomery, and Allen Robinson, if we’re lucky.

It’s now 2024 though.. Khalil Mack is now 33, past his prime, and in the final year of his deal. Roquan Smith might be a Bear depending on if we can figure out a contract for him soon. Robert Quinn is well out of the league. Same with Akiem Hicks probably. Eddie Jackson is 30. Who knows how he’s gonna be looking by then. Jaylon Johnson could be a very good piece by then getting ready for a new deal. Danny Trevathan will be long gone. Eddie Goldman will probably be gone as well. So, the Bears have 3 years to rebuild an offensive line and an aging defense. Remember this is if they find a good offensive minded coach who can turn Justin Fields into our franchise quarterback. That’s asking so much out of this front office. With the moves that have been made since the firing of Lovie Smith you truly believe they can do that in a very short 3 years? Hell no. This team is an easy 4-6 years away from Super Bowl contention if Justin Fields is that guy. We’re talking nailing on a head coach hire, countless draft picks, and handling the cap hell we will be in the next two year to the absolute best. You can count on that too. Great teams aren’t built overnight.

The Bears are in a race with Father Time. The Chicago Bears history in the Super Bowl era has a lot of great players, with a lot of characters and stories. Not a whole lot of winning. The moves they make over the next two years can turn this team into a winning team for a decade, or set us back until the late 20’s of the 21st century. The Bears can reset after this year with a lot of great pieces to build around. The clock is ticking.
