With all the “HITS” come the misses. The Chicago Bears looked like the team the nation expected them to be this season on Sunday night. Now they definitely didn’t look like the worst team in the nation, but they were not the team we saw week one. The questions arise now as the Bears are back in Halas Hall, and someone needs to answer them. Maybe time will answer the questions that loom over the head of this franchise, or maybe we will go week by week wondering what is in store for the Chicago Bears.
Do the Chicago Bears trust Justin Fields with the ball in his hands?
This is such a frustrating question but it needs to be asked. I feel like it’s too early to say yes or no. In a Monsoon game, and a highly emotional game, it’s hard to know how Chicago’s offense is supposed to be run. Looking at the stat sheet it seems clear that Luke Getsy doesn’t trust Justin Fields to throw the ball. I find that hard to believe. 11 passing attempts against Green Bay when trailing most of the game seems ridiculous. At the same time, the run game was working in full force. If you want to win the game you stick with what’s working. What the Bears need to also realize is this is a developing football team who needs to grow. Justin Fields needs to be throwing the ball a lot more to see if he’s the guy we can trust with the ball in his hands.
Where on earth is Roquan Smith?
After all this offseason drama of betting on himself when it comes to a contract situation, it seems as if maybe he’s taking the wrong bet. He sure doesn’t look like a $20 million dollar linebacker let alone an $18 million dollar linebacker. He hasn’t shown up at all yet two weeks into the season. He was nowhere to be found against Green Bay except being bullied in front of the nation by AJ Dillon. He’s not doing anything to help this defense against the run. He has yet to show that he can take over a game and be the next great Chicago Bears linebacker.
How has Luke Getsy failed to involve Cole Kmet and Darnell Mooney into the passing game?
Two of the Bears youngest cornerstone offensive pieces have been nowhere to be found two weeks into the season. I’m so lost on why these guys haven’t been established into the offense so far. In last night's game against Green Bay it was a 3rd and fairly long. Maybe 7-9 yards. I saw Darnell Mooney waiting at the line of scrimmage like he was a check down option. Our best wide receiver is hanging around at the sticks on 3rd and long? Luke Getsy doesn’t have to answer if he trusts Justin Fields or not yet, but he does need to answer about not being able to fit Darnell Mooney or Cole Kmet into the passing game.
There’s a bunch of other valuable questions still to be asked about what the Bears plan is, and none of them could even come close to being answered right now. I’m not one to sit here and overreact to one loss against a good team, but these are serious questions that need to be asked. We are a very young team, with inexperienced play callers who also have to learn as the season goes on. Hopefully time will answer all.
