By now you know that Tom Brady is 44 years old and in his 22nd NFL season. What you may not
know is that he is leading the league in passing yards (1,767). That would be 162 more than the
next guy. Not to mention he is 2nd behind Patrick Mahomes for most touchdowns this season
with 15. Oh yeah and he is top 5 in passer rating which is 108.5. Needless to say, Tom Brady is
in fact an extraterrestrial. Doing things, no human/quarterback has ever done at this stage of
their career. Defying all odds stacked against an aging quarterback into his 40s let alone his mid
40s. TB12’s most touchdowns thrown in a season was 50 back in his 2007 MVP year when he
was 30. He is well on that pace and even has an extra game to do it with the now 18-week
regular season. His team is also 4-1 so far. Brady has had only 2 seasons in his entire 22 years in the league with less than 10 wins. Year 2 as a starter (9-7) and 2008 the year he got hurt in
week 1 (1-0). Even more impressive is that he has only won less than 11 games an additional 2
years (2005, 2009). An astounding 234-70 career record as a starter, Brady has no sign of
slowing down. There is no doubt in my mind Brady can break the single season touchdown
record, which sits at 55 set by Peyton Manning in 2013. Even with a shaky game against his
former team, the New England Patriots, with no touchdowns and 51% completion percentage,
He still finds his name atop the leader board in the important stat categories.
Aging like fine wine, with amazing talent across the board, Tom Brady I predict will win the NFL
MVP. Or at least, if he stays on this pace, he should be the MVP. As football fans we are blessed
with some great quarterback play. One of my favorites Justin Herbert has all the makings of an
elite signal caller. Herbert in his second year with the Los Angeles Chargers is carrying this team
to new heights. The trajectory he is one is similar to a Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson. With
great 1 st year success and following it up with heavy MVP talk in year 2. Joe Burrow also in year
2 after missing games with a knee injury his rookie season, has shown improvement as well
with the Bengals. But Brady, 20+ years older than both of these quarterbacks is performing as if
he were their age. It seems we will be hearing about the age gap between Brady and these
young up and comers a lot. For example, when the Bucs played the Patriots a week ago. All we
heard was “Tom Brady and Mac Jones, is the largest age gap between 2 starting quarterbacks
facing off against each other.” Again, hearing this just shows what Brady is doing is unnatural.
He joked with Rob Gronkowski how he could play until he is 50. If he still loves the game and
the passion and fire is there, I could see that as a possibility. It was hard to imagine Brady
playing this well at 40. Then here he is at 44 doing things guys in their 20s could only dream of.
Many critics were debating whether he should hang the cleats up after his last season in New
England, which saw Brady lose in the opening playoff game for the 3 rd time in his career. You
read that correctly, 18 years of playoff Tom Brady and he exited in his first game only 3 times.
The Patriots were on the record stating they could win with any other quarterback if they had
to. The fact of the matter is, Brady was the glue holding that roster together. A roster
offensively that Brady led to a 12-4 record in 2019. The next year when Cam Newton was the
leader of the offense, with most of the same pieces, Patriots were 7-9 and missed the playoffs
for the first time since 2008. You know, the year he was injured in week 1. Bill Belichick is still a
defensive genius and arguably the greatest head coach ever. In every relationship you need
both sides on the same page to be successful.
Truthfully, I don’t think we will see a player come in this league and give us a career that Tom
Brady has given us. Drafted in the 6th round, 199th overall pick. Biggest chip on his shoulder year in and year out. The competitive nature to keep on going and pushing through adversity.
Getting players to un-retire, teammates to take pay cuts, always striving for the “next ring”.
Simply just won’t happen again. You know the saying, “lightning never strikes twice in the same
spot.”. Many people dubbed Patrick Mahomes the next G.O.A.T. or next “Tom Brady”. Couldn’t
be the furthest thing from the truth. Not to mention Brady is now 1-0 against Mahomes in the
Super Bowl. 7-3 record in the biggest game. Stacked with talent like the 2007 Patriots, I have no
reason to not believe in TB12 again this year. How could you not believe in a guy who ages in
reverse. Looks younger at 44 than he did at 24. Let us enjoy this 2021 Tom Brady journey. The
quest to ring number 8 will be a fun ride. I expect Justin Fields, Josh Allen, and Zach Wilson all
to take notes when they go up against the G.O.A.T. himself this year. When you go up against
an A.L.F. you want to make sure you still their tricks so you can one day use it against them.
TB12 is here to stay.
