Teddy Bridgewater has won the Denver Broncos starting QB job. “Teddy Two Gloves” and Drew Lock battled it out all offseason and I think it was a decision made on the fact that Bridgewater won the job and that Lock didn’t lose it.
The Broncos wanted Lock’s game to improve and I’m not sure if Teddy caused that, but Lock showed plenty of progression in the preseason by not chucking the ball up down the field carelessly to his #1 option. Lock went through the progressions and was able to find his dump offs and checkdown. Lock has much more arm talent between the two but I think the one aspect that set the two apart was the pocket presence. Lock limited the interceptions but has a consistent issue with holding onto the football when he gets sacked or hit in the pocket. For a defensive head coach that’s on the hot seat, ball security is a key ingredient for a team with a defense that has the ability to be the best defense in football. The Broncos have the Giants, Jaguars, Jets, and Raiders in 4 of their first 6 weeks, which if you are a playoff team, they can’t walk out against those teams and turn the ball over. I think what goes unnoticed is the next GM, George Paton, was a big part of drafting Teddy in Minnesota years ago. Pat Shurmur was Teddy’s offensive coordinator when Teddy was looking like a franchise QB and tore his ACL, almost ending his career. There might be a chance that both of those guys believe in the right system, Teddy can be a franchise Quarterback and can play the best football of his career.
Bridgewater will give the Broncos a more accurate passer where the ball may move more slower but more positive plays than in the previous 5 years with Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynch, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, Brandon Allen, Jeff Driskel, Brett Rypien, and Drew Lock. What a tough list of guys to have as your QB since they have won the Super Bowl in 2016. They also have the best group of weapons they’ve had so whether it was Drew or Teddy, the offense will move and stop with the Quarterback position. Whether the decision was Bridgewater or Lock, I think if the season starter struggles to move the ball and put up points, they’ll have no problem giving the nod to the other one.
